Origin of monacolin K
Monacolin K is a substance formed during fermentation of rice by the yeast Monascus purpureus (red fermented rice). In food products its dose is limited to below 3 mg per day, in line with Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2022/860. In this supplement the daily serving (2 tablets) provides 2.9 mg of monacolin K.
Since 19 August 2024, monacolin K does not hold an authorised EFSA health claim (Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2024/2041 withdrew the earlier authorisation). Its use requires observing the full contraindications, see the “Contraindications and warnings” section below.
What is found in natto
Natto is a traditional Japanese fermented soy product. In our workshop it is made from certified organic soy, fermented by Bacillus subtilis natto bacteria. Ingredients naturally present in natto:
- Vitamin K (in the K2 MK-7 form, menaquinone-7)
- The enzyme nattokinase (formed during fermentation)
- Soy isoflavones (polyphenols present in soy)
- Live bacterial cultures Bacillus subtilis natto
- Spermidine and PQQ (compounds naturally present in fermented soy)
- Plant protein, fibre, B-group vitamins, minerals (potassium, magnesium, phosphorus)
Vitamin K, authorised EFSA claims (Reg. (EU) 432/2012):
- Vitamin K contributes to normal blood clotting.
- Vitamin K contributes to the maintenance of normal bones.
Nattokinase, soy isoflavones, spermidine, PQQ and the microorganisms Bacillus subtilis natto do not hold authorised EFSA health claims. This information is provided to describe the product’s composition.
