This page brings together, in one place, the rules under which we publish content about natto, along with information important for safety. Please read it before introducing natto into your diet, especially if you are on ongoing drug therapy.
Nature of the content
The content on the Natto.pl website is for information and education only and is based on publicly available knowledge about traditional fermented food and on peer-reviewed scientific publications. It does not constitute medical, clinical or pharmaceutical advice and does not replace consultation with a doctor or dietitian. Natto is a foodstuff (food or functional food), not a medicine.
Safety with anticoagulant medication
⚠️ Important information for people on anticoagulant therapy
Natto has a very high vitamin K content. For most adults it is a safe food, but people taking oral anticoagulants from the group of vitamin K antagonists (warfarin, acenocoumarol, phenprocoumon) must absolutely consult their treating doctor before eating natto. The high vitamin K content may reduce the effect of these medicines.
New-generation anticoagulants that do not act as vitamin K antagonists (NOACs/DOACs, e.g. apixaban, rivaroxaban, dabigatran) usually do not require such dietary restrictions, but every decision is made by the treating doctor.
Health claims and compliance with food law
We use health claims about vitamins only in the wording authorised by Commission Regulation (EU) No 432/2012 and in accordance with the EFSA register. This applies, among others, to:
- Vitamin K contributes to normal blood clotting.
- Vitamin K contributes to the maintenance of normal bones.
- Vitamin D contributes to normal absorption and utilisation of calcium and phosphorus.
- Magnesium contributes to the maintenance of normal bones.
The other components naturally present in natto (nattokinase, spermidine, PQQ, soy isoflavones and cultures of Bacillus subtilis Natto bacteria) do not hold authorised EFSA health claims. We describe them solely to present the composition of the product and do not attribute any health effect to them.
The scientific literature cited on the site illustrates the research context and is not an authorised health claim.
