In the scientific literature, Akkermansia muciniphila is one of the more frequently studied species of gut bacteria. Studies describe its presence in the intestinal mucus layer and relationships between its abundance and various metabolic parameters observed in microbiome analyses.
An important note: a significant part of these observations comes from studies in animal models and from observational studies in humans, which describe correlations, not cause and effect relationships. Results obtained under such conditions do not automatically translate into specific health effects after a dietary intervention. Neither Akkermansia muciniphila nor any single gut bacterium has an authorised health claim in the European Union (Regulation (EC) 1924/2006).
What affects the composition of the gut microflora
